The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and allow the comic to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to supply fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or more to make up for time.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple at most coming out each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
